Employment at Will Doctrine
Illinois, Indiana, and Michigan follow the doctrine of employment-at-will. Under the doctrine of employment-at-will, an employer can fire an employee for any reason, including unfair reasons. The employment-at-will doctrine is the general default rule that the Illinois, Indiana, Michigan, and Federal courts apply unless the employment-at-will doctrine has been modified by contract or an exception applies.
Employers cannot fire employees for an illegal reason
A major exception to the employment-at-will doctrine is that an employer cannot fire an employee for a reason that is considered illegal under Illinois, Indiana, Michigan, or Federal law. Common examples of an illegal reason for terminating an employee would be a discriminatory or retaliatory reason that violates Illinois, Indiana, Michigan, or Federal law.

Success Stories
“Brian is an awesome lawyer. I was really nervous and had spoken to several other lawyers that did not seem to care. Brian made everything very easy and got me a much larger settlement than I expected. I never had to go to a deposition. The thing I noticed most about Brian is that he actually cares. I got more empathy from him than people that I know. Thank you very much Brian!”
– Dan O.
“Great lawyer, highly recommended. When I was searching for a lawyer I stumbled across Brian J. Graber, and what stood out immediately was that he will be the attention, time, and energy that Mr. Graber out forth to hear my claim. After the first phone call I already had my suspicions that he will be the best candidate to represent me in a wrongful termination suit due to the explicit details he went into just in the first phone interview. Then after meeting with Mr. Graber for the first time I knew he would be the best lawyer for me. He spoke with me in detail with dignity and respect explaining all the risk and positive possibilities in the process of how lawsuits work. For all the questions I had Mr. Graber had extended breakdown answers ensuring that I knew all the information prior to proceeding. If you’re looking for a wrongful termination lawyer, Mr. Graber is your guy, he has the knowledge, he puts in the time, and effort and produces results.”

“Brian got me my job back and a great settlement on my whistleblower claim!”
